Hours: 15-20 per week (flexible)
Contract length: permanent after probationary period of 6 months
Location: Reading and Surrounding Berkshire areas
Salary: £1000 p/ month with opportunity for extra earnings if more coaching hours completed
Job Description:

Reading Rockets Basketball club is a well-established community focussed organisation. We are looking to add to our dedicated, enthusiastic and hardworking team of community coaches with a position that delivers coaching opportunities wot work with children as young as 4 years old right through to 18.

The main purpose of this role is to be at the forefront of community engagement with an aim of not only supporting the work the community team already undertake but also in being instrumental in setting up new community basketball hubs and Satellite programmes so more children can become involved in playing on a weekly basis.

The role will involve running lunchtime, in curriculum and afterschool basketball clubs and developing a primary school league in Reading for these schools. Running and developing new and existing mini basketball hubs (players 4-12 years old) and. Coaching and developing competition pathways for the clubs Mini Basketball Satellite programme (players 13-18 years old).

There is also opportunities to coach in the clubs elite programme as either as assistant or head coach and work weekly with a squad during the regular season.

The candidate must be open to working with and developing their ability to coach children with special educational needs as part of their Special Olympics inclusion programme.

The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to work collaboratively within a team but also show initiative and leadership when it comes to leading programmes and sessions. They must be confident enough to liaise with schools and the wider community and be able to engage with the families involved in the programmes.

A competency in using technology is also required in order for the candidate to be able to use the clubs online Class For Kids registration portal and Views registration software.

Job Accountabilities

To deliver a range of quality coaching programmes for young people as directed by the Head of Community Services and/or Project Manager.

To undertake the necessary planning for each activity session to ensure that the programme demonstrates progression throughout.

To ensure that accurate records are maintained for the purpose of monitoring and evaluation through the clubs Class For Kids system.

To respect the rights of the participants and ensure that their wellbeing and safety is always considered.

To inform Reading Rockets of any accidents/ incidents which occur whilst working on the programme, and to inform the Head of Junior development and/or the Project Manager of any concerns which may arise.

To support and assist any other coach, adult or young person that works on the activity alongside you.

To display consistent high standards of behaviour in accordance with Reading Rockets and England Basketball codes of conduct.

To keep up to date with all current coaching practices and undertake continuous professional development, including all minimum operating standards training in order to comply with the scheme.

To understand and implement Reading Rockets Basketball Club policies and procedures as they relate to the delivery of services to young people; Data Protection Act, Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding policies, and Codes of Conduct as they relate to coaches.

To follow all procedures laid down by Reading Rockets Basketball Club relating to the running of activities.

To undertake other duties and responsibilities as required from time to time.

This position will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and appointment to the position will be dependent on the outcome of this process and the taking up of references. Reading Rockets is committed to equal opportunities.

Essential Requirements

Experience working with groups of primary school and secondary school age children

Driving licence and own transport and willingness to travel

A willingness to work flexible hours including some weekends and evenings.

Have permission to work in the UK

DBS Clearance – This will be carried out by the club

Updated First Aid and Safeguarding qualifications

Level 2 or higher Basketball Qualification
