Solent extend their winning streak to beyond 2 years

Team Solent Kestrels 101 | Orlan Jackman 28 PTS, 12 REB | Ian Smith 19 PTS, 9 AST, 3 STL

Reading Rockets 73 | O’Showen Williams 19 PTS, 8 REB, 6 AST, 4 STL | Reis Pinnock 14 PTS, 9 AST, 6 STL, 6 REB

Solent’s league record of staying undefeated since February 2019 looked at risk for the first half against a spirited Rockets team but a second half impetus saw them extend that record as they took it 57-38.  However Rockets can be proud that they are the first team in the league this year which has lost to Solent by less than 30 points.

Rockets played well in the opening 2 quarters as two young guards in Reis Pinnock and Sam Grant hit 10 and 11 points respectively whilst both defended superbly too as Solent edged the first period by just 21-18 and the second 23-17 with Solent’s most influential player, ex BBL and G B stalwart Orlan Jackman hitting 18 personal points before the interval. Rockets had tied the game at 28 each but a 16-0 Solent run hurt Rockets who came back with a 7-0 run including a buzzer beating drive and finish by O’Showen Williams going into the changing room 35-44 adrift.

Williams scored 9 of Rockets 15 points in the third period but Solent were rampant scoring 25 points as Rockets piled up the fouls finding themselves gifting Solent many trips to the foul throw line.  Rockets had cut the deficit to just  6 points with their first two possessions including a Williams treble  but Solent responded with 2 quick scores before Leome Francis scored his first points of the game with a clinical inside move.  Williams stroked another treble to stay just 6 points down but Jackman returned the compliment for Solent. You just had to admire Rockets hustle as they troubled Solent as Williams finished a drive and hit the penalty stroke too keeping Rockets 48-56 midway rough the third quarter but a Solent period of 16-2 began to take the game away from the visitors as the quarter ended with Rockets trailing 50-72.

A 9-0 start by Solent saw them in control with a 31 point lead which they held effectively till the final 2 minutes when Sam Grant drove to score and late arrival ( due to work commitments ) Sam Toluwase hit a treble before another academy student Kivuvu Live hit Rockets’ last score as they went down 73-101 to a very talented Solent Kestrels where 32 points were scored by their bench  players which tells you how strong in depth this Solent side is.

Top scorers for Rockets were O’Showen Williams with 19 points 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 6 assists , Sam Grant with 16 points, with Reis Pinnock playing a major role with not only 14 points but also 6 rebounds, 6 steals and 9 assists in a complete performance for the young guard.

Rockets now travel to Oakland Wolves next Sunday tipping at 3.30 pm.
