Reading Rockets senior men have continued their impressive start to the new National Basketball League season, as the National Trophy pool stages got underway at the weekend.
Despite missing key players through injury, Rockets shot to a comfortable 83 v 68 win against Thames Valley Cavaliers with recent signing AJ Carr top scorer. The American got off to a slow start but then ignited to amass 27 points throughout the game.
Rockets themselves enjoyed a spirited start, powering to a double-digit lead within the first five minutes, taking a 13-1 advantage. Rockets held or increased this throughout the game despite American player Trae Pemberton being forced to sit out through injury, and with a brace of other players unavailable. Captain Danny Carter led by example, scoring 19.
Three Rockets Academy players made significant contributions, while Head Coach Alan Keane was thrilled to have returning guard Sydney Donaldson on court, scoring 14 points.
All in all, this was a very good early season performance from the exciting young Rockets side, who return to action this coming Saturday for the first league game of the 2018/19 NBL season.
Rockets will be aiming to be fully fit in front of a packed crowd at Rivermead Leisure Centre as they take on Derby Trailblazers (5pm tip, tickets available on the door).
Head Coach Alan Keane: “Under the challenging circumstances of being without three of our top players came a wonderful opportunity for some of our younger U19 EABL players to step up and play significant minutes. We played the first half at a good pace, and defensively we were well connected. There were moments throughout the second half where we allowed our opponents back in and gave them confidence. This is certainly an area we need to develop, to finish teams off when we are capable. All eyes now turn to this coming weekend, as we prepare to build on today’s performance and take the next step in the process.”
Tickets for Saturday’s home game against Derby Trailblazers are available from Rivermead Leisure Centre on game day – adults £8, children £5 with family discount. Refreshments, merchandise and other entertainment will be on offer throughout the event.
